Managing Competition and Finding Cooperation: US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s Visit to China

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in China for his second visit in less than a year, aiming to address deep differences over security, trade, and international relations. However, the focus was on urging restraint regarding Taiwan as China issued a warning that US military support for the island increases the risk of conflict in the Taiwan Strait.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin emphasized that strengthening military relations between the US and Taiwan would not bring security to Taiwan. He warned that it would only escalate tensions and increase the risk of conflict across the Taiwan Strait. The US Congress recently approved an aid package for its allies, including Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Taiwan’s President-elect Lai Ching-te welcomed the aid but noted that it would enhance deterrence against tyranny and authoritarianism.

As Blinken prepares for talks with Chinese leaders in Beijing, both sides are exploring ways to protect their national interests while engaging in constructive dialogue. The hope is to manage competition responsibly and find areas of cooperation that benefit both countries and promote stability in the region. In addition to political discussions, Blinken will meet with students and industry leaders in Shanghai to demonstrate friendly relations between the US and China at a critical time when both countries navigate complex issues in their relationship.
