62-year-old Mr. Van suffered from a serious fall down the stairs that resulted in a fracture of his rib cage, pleural effusion, and an increased risk of infection. Despite being treated at Kien Giang Provincial Hospital, his pleural fluid increased significantly and caused compression and partial collapse of his lung. To address this issue, a pleural drain was placed to drain air, fluid, blood, or pleural pus from his chest wall into the pleural cavity. However, after 5 days of treatment, his lungs were still not expanding properly and he was transferred to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for further care.

During his time at Tam Anh General Hospital, Dr. Tran Quoc Hoai from the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery performed surgery on Mr. Van to treat his broken ribs and hemothorax. The surgery involved making a long incision in the chest to remove adhesions, fluid, and blood clots while rearranging and fixing the displaced broken ribs. After the surgery, Mr. Van experienced no pain and his lungs expanded well with no signs of infection. He was discharged after 5 days of recovery following the successful treatment he received at Tam Anh General Hospital.
