The General Services Administration’s Login.gov platform is set to implement facial matching technology in order to comply with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Digital Identity Guidelines for remote identity verification at Identity Assurance Level 2. This initiative will begin in May, allowing users from existing agency partners to verify their identity by matching a live selfie with the photo on their self-supplied ID, such as a driver’s license. The images will only be used for identity verification purposes to uphold user privacy.

GSA emphasized that this new identity verification pathway will protect user data, prevent fraud, and adhere to IAL2 guidelines while maintaining a strong commitment to privacy, accessibility, and security. Ann Lewis, the director of GSA’s Technology Transformation Services, expressed excitement for the upcoming launch of this technology, stating that it will simplify the delivery of benefits to millions of Americans in a secure and efficient manner.

The platform is also planning to introduce a visible option for users to verify their identity in person at over 18,000 participating U.S. Postal Service retail locations. This option will provide an additional layer of security and convenience for users who prefer not to use facial matching technology or who need assistance verifying their identity in person.

In addition, Login.gov is planning to implement a new pricing model for agency partners in the coming months, further enhancing its offerings for users and agencies alike. This new pricing model is designed to be more transparent and affordable for agency partners while still providing them with access to Login.gov’s robust services and capabilities.
