A young girl was experiencing severe itching on her eyelids, which didn’t subside with saline drops. Her family noticed that she had objects stuck to her eyelashes and the itching worsened over time. Concerned, they sought emergency treatment at Saigon Can Tho Eye Hospital in the early hours of May 5.

Upon examination, Doctor Le Viet Phap discovered dozens of lice clinging to the girl’s eyelids. He removed all the lice and eggs from her eyelashes and gave instructions to the family on how to prevent future spread and reinfection.

Eyelash lice, scientifically known as Pthirus pubis, are parasitic arthropods that feed on human blood. They can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or indirectly through clothing and towels. Symptoms include chronic irritation, itchy eyelids, allergies caused by their saliva, and conjunctivitis or keratitis resulting from their feces and saliva.

To prevent the spread of eyelash lice, parents should use antibacterial shower gel and shampoo to remove them from their hair and skin. Clothes and bedding should also be washed at high temperatures regularly. Treatment for affected areas should be prescribed by a doctor. Complete resolution requires treating both the patient and family members who may have been exposed to the lice. Immediate examination and treatment are recommended for any unusual signs like scratches, pain, blurred vision or obstructed vision.

The incident serves as a reminder for parents to be vigilant about hygiene practices and seek prompt medical attention if their children exhibit any unusual symptoms.
