South Korean shipbuilder HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (KSOE) is collaborating with Infineon Technologies on a project to develop applications for the electrification of marine engines and machinery using energy-efficient power semiconductor technology. The companies have entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly work on this initiative. KSOE is focusing on creating environmentally friendly, decarbonized ship technology that utilizes electricity and hydrogen.

Infineon will offer technical assistance and mentoring to KSOE in semiconductor power modules and system solutions. They will also share information on new semiconductor trends for marine applications. Through this collaboration, KSOE aims to enhance the reliability and performance of marine vessels’ propulsion drive technology, contributing to environmental sustainability through the electrification of ships. Power semiconductors will play a critical role in ensuring precise control of multiple power modules, such as large-capacity propulsion drives. This partnership marks an important step towards developing efficient and eco-friendly marine technology by combining expertise in power semiconductor technology and shipbuilding. Together, they aim to create cutting-edge solutions that will revolutionize the way ships are powered and contribute to a greener future for the marine sector.
