At the 62nd Annual Player of the Year Event in New Ulm, KNUJ announced their 2023-2024 Winter Athletes of the Year. Out of 44 nominees, three athletes were selected for their outstanding performances.

In girls basketball, Rhyan Holmgren from St. Peter was named the KNUJ Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She stood out for her play in the Class AAA State Tournament and averaged an impressive 21.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.

Nick Slater from Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Area was honored as the Wrestler of the Year. Slater contributed to his team’s success at the team state tournament and placed second at the individual state tournament in the 189-pound weight class. He finished the season with a record of 47-6.

Colton Benson from New Ulm received his second KNUJ Boys Basketball Player of the Year award. Benson excelled with an average of 27.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game for the Eagles, finishing his career with an impressive 2,207 points.

In addition to honoring the individual award winners, KNUJ also recognized five state tournament teams at the event: New Ulm boys hockey team, LCWMA wrestling team, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart girls basketball team, St. Peter girls basketball team, and Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey boys basketball team.
