Jacksonville is taking a proactive approach to address its high rate of mental health problems with the launch of a new initiative called “Mental Health Matters Jax.” During Mental Health Awareness Month, Mayor Donna Deegan announced three new programs as part of this initiative.

The first program is a Mental Health First Aid education program aimed at helping people identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use. The National Council for Mental Wellbeing will manage this program to equip community members with the skills needed to provide initial help and support to those in crisis. This will not only help individuals but also create a culture of understanding and empathy in the community.

In addition, Deegan announced funding for two more crisis managers at the United Way of Florida’s 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline call center in response to a 75% increase in calls since 2022. This initiative aims to provide additional support for individuals in crisis who need immediate assistance.

The third program announced focuses on providing aid for children and teens facing mental health issues. The city is allocating $430,000 to Angel Kids Pediatrics to provide mental and behavioral health services in underserved parts of Jacksonville, as well as in Amelia Island and St. Johns County. This will ensure that children have access to the care they need to thrive mentally and emotionally.

By taking these steps, Jacksonville is demonstrating its commitment to addressing mental health issues head-on and creating a more supportive community for all residents.
