The Israeli army has begun evacuating approximately 100,000 Palestinians from eastern Rafah city in the south of Gaza Strip in preparation for a ground assault. According to the World Health Organization, about 1.2 million people reside in Rafah, with many fleeing from other areas due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants.

Residents in the eastern neighborhoods of Rafah have been urged to evacuate and head towards the “humanitarian zone” of Al Mawasi by the Israeli Army. The evacuation order, communicated through posters, SMS messages, phone calls, and media broadcasts, is considered “limited in scope” and temporary, aimed at ensuring the safety of civilians.

While there has been no explicit link between the evacuation and a planned land invasion of Rafah, Israeli forces are urging residents to comply for their own security. The Al Mawasi area has been expanded to accommodate evacuees and provide humanitarian aid such as field hospitals, tents, food, water, and medical supplies.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that dismantling Hamas forces operating in Rafah is necessary for peace to be achieved. Recent attacks by Hamas have led to casualties among Israeli soldiers and heightened tensions in the region.

The UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees has raised concerns about the escalating violence and restrictions on humanitarian operations in Gaza. Incidents involving shooting at convoys, arrests of UN personnel, and delays at checkpoints have hindered relief efforts and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to address the needs of civilians affected by the conflict while working towards finding a peaceful resolution to this ongoing crisis.
