The National Security Council in Iraq has announced the outlawing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), also known as the Kurdish underground, which operates within the country. This move comes after years of conflict between the PKK and neighboring Turkey, resulting in the deaths of many fighters. Iraq had previously avoided taking such action against the PKK, but now the council’s decision is expected to lead to a large-scale operation by Turkey against the group, which is considered a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union.

The timing of the announcement by the National Security Council, following a visit by a Turkish delegation to Iraq, indicates a coordinated effort between the two countries. The Kurdish autonomous government in northern Iraq also played a role in the decision, with promises of a new continental corridor connecting Baghdad and Ankara. This corridor is intended to establish transportation connections and industrial areas between southern Iraq and Turkey, creating economic opportunities and enhancing trade relations.

The proposed land corridor between Turkey and Iraq is part of a larger plan to create a transportation link connecting Europe to the Persian Gulf and the Far East. This project aims to boost trade, create jobs, and increase export capabilities for both countries. Turkey sees this as an opportunity to assert its influence in the region, especially in light of recent political developments and regional conflicts.
