In 2024, two outstanding educators from Iowa have been named as finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by the state Department of Education. Susan Wenger, who teaches mathematics at Valley Elementary School in Elgin, and Brenda Kaufmann, who is a second-grade teacher at North Tama Elementary School in Traer and also serves as the district’s STEM coordinator, are among the 110 teachers being recognized this year.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is a prestigious program that honors kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science. Since its establishment in 1983, over 5,200 teachers from all 50 states, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and six U.S. jurisdictions have been honored through this program. The recipients are chosen based on their exceptional teaching skills, deep subject knowledge, and ability to inspire and support student success. They serve as role models in their communities and demonstrate the significant impact teachers have on student achievement.

Receiving the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching includes a paid trip to Washington D.C., where they will be recognized at events and have access to professional development opportunities. Additionally, they will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and a certificate signed by the President of the United States. The Iowa Department of Education is excited to announce the winners later this year and celebrate these dedicated educators who embody excellence in teaching mathematics and science.
