Three high school students from Bedford Park have achieved great success in a regional science competition, taking home the top prize for their eco-friendly invention. The trio, all sophomores at The Bronx High School of Science, impressed judges at the ExploraVision competition, organized by the National Science Teaching Association. Their groundbreaking invention involves replacing lithium-ion batteries with sodium-ion batteries, which they believe are more sustainable.

Their innovative project has earned them a spot in the national ExploraVision competition, which will take place in June in Washington D.C. With their sights set on the national stage, these young inventors have proven that with hard work and creativity, anything is possible. Their commitment to developing environmentally friendly solutions to modern challenges is truly inspiring, and they have undoubtedly set a high standard for future participants in science competitions.

The students explained that they used a live fungal species to interact with the chemical compound in order to increase the efficiency and longevity of the sodium-ion batteries. They completed their research paper and idea in just six weeks, demonstrating their dedication and talent in the field of science. Their project showcases how innovation can lead to sustainable solutions that can benefit society as a whole.
