In recent years, the US has become a popular destination for Indian students. However, a troubling trend has emerged involving incidents involving Indian students in the country. This week, an Indian-American student named Ishika Thakore went missing in Frisco since Monday. The Frisco police had sought the public’s help in locating her by posting on X that she was last seen wearing a black long-sleeve t-shirt and red/green pajama pants.

Responding to the police post, it was confirmed that Ishika Thakore has been located. This comes in the wake of several Indian and Indian-origin students dying in the US this year. A 25-year-old student from Hyderabad who moved to the US in 2023 was found dead earlier this week. This event adds to a troubling trend of incidents involving Indian students in the United States. Mohammed Abdul Arfath had been missing for nearly three weeks before his body was found.

Since the beginning of 2024, there have been at least 11 deaths involving Indian or Indian-origin students in the US. Despite these incidents, the US remains a top choice for Indian students seeking higher education, with over 2.6 lakh Indian students migrating to the country in the 2022-2023 session, representing a 35% increase from the previous year. It is important for both universities and governments to address this issue and ensure that all students feel safe and supported while studying abroad.
