Ann Mayers, a 74-year-old woman from Hamilton, Ohio, robbed a bank despite having no criminal history. On April 19, she walked into an AurGroup Credit Union office in Fairfield Township and demanded money while showing her gun. She left the scene with only $500 stolen and was quickly tracked down by police at her home a few kilometers away. The stolen firearm was found in her car, and Mayers confessed immediately when arrested, admitting to the robbery.
However, it turns out that Mayers may have been a victim of online scams herself. Her family revealed that she had sent money to an unidentified person before the robbery. Despite this potential victimization, Mayers chose to solve her problem by committing a crime. Her family members were aware of her plan but did not take it seriously.
Mayers is currently being held in Butler County Jail in Ohio and is seeking a pro bono lawyer due to her inability to afford one. It remains unclear how she fell victim to the online scammer or how she borrowed thousands of dollars from friends and family to pay them back. The police have not yet found evidence of any fraud related to the missing funds.
