Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized the importance of Veterans Day as a long-overdue recognition of those who are willing to make great sacrifices for their country. He highlighted various operations and missions carried out by soldiers such as those in Afghanistan, protecting merchant shipping, evacuations from crisis areas, and assistance during natural disasters like forest fires or COVID-19 pandemic.
Germany has chosen to define veterans in the broadest possible terms, encompassing almost every active or former soldier within the Bundeswehr. This inclusive definition aims to avoid disputes over who qualifies as a veteran and recognizes diverse experiences and needs of those who have served their country.
There have been ongoing discussions about support provided to veterans after their service with calls for improved care and social appreciation.
