OpenAI, co-founded by Sam Altman, has unveiled its latest AI tool called Sora. This video generator is specifically designed to create realistic videos based on user prompts and can generate videos up to a minute long with complex scenes, multiple characters, specific motion, and accurate details.

Altman and Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer, recently met with Hollywood executives from Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros. Discovery to discuss Sora. However, despite some studios being open to using the tool in production as it could potentially save time and money, OpenAI did not move forward with formal agreements.

Concerns about the impact of AI on the creative industries have been raised in light of issues such as actors’ and writers’ strikes that occurred last year. Filmmaker Tyler Perry has expressed his apprehension about AI’s influence on the industry and even halted an expansion of one of his production studios due to Sora.

As competitors such as Google-backed startup Runway, Meta’s Emu Video, and Google’s Lumiere continue to develop text-to-video tools, the movie industry is facing new challenges and opportunities in the realm of content creation. With these tools becoming more advanced and accessible, filmmakers must now consider how they can use them effectively while still maintaining their creative vision and control over the final product.

In response to these concerns, Altman has been working hard to assure Hollywood executives that Sora will not be detrimental to the movie industry. He believes that AI can enhance content creation by allowing filmmakers to focus on storytelling rather than spending time on repetitive tasks like animation or special effects.
