Three high school students from The Bronx High School of Science are celebrating their victory in a regional science competition for their innovative and eco-friendly invention. The talented trio, all sophomores, were awarded first place in the prestigious ExploraVision competition organized by the National Science Teaching Association.

Their groundbreaking creation involved designing a replacement for lithium-ion batteries, opting instead for sodium-ion batteries. The students believe that sodium-ion batteries are a more sustainable alternative and have the potential to revolutionize the energy storage industry. To enhance the efficiency of their invention, they incorporated a live fungal species to interact with the chemical compound, increasing the battery’s longevity.

In just six weeks, the students were able to conduct research, develop their idea, and present their findings in a research paper. Their hard work and dedication paid off as they now prepare to compete in the national ExploraVision competition in June, which will take place in Washington D.C. This incredible achievement showcases the students’ ingenuity and commitment to creating a more sustainable future through their innovative scientific contributions.

The Bronx High School of Science has always been known for its focus on STEM education, and this group of students is no exception. Their success in this competition demonstrates not only their scientific prowess but also their passion for making a difference in the world through innovation.

As they move on to compete at the national level, these three students are excited to continue pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities within science and technology. Their groundbreaking work has already had an impact on their local community by raising awareness about sustainable energy solutions and inspiring others to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Overall, this group of talented high schoolers has set an example for others by demonstrating how hard work, dedication, and creativity can lead to remarkable achievements in science and technology.
