Yuri was a patient who had suffered from a completely destroyed lower bone in his ankle joint, making it impossible to perform standard surgery. This led the medical team to think creatively about alternative solutions, and the idea of 3D printing an entire ankle joint system came up as a potential solution. After confirming the feasibility of the procedure with a laboratory, the decision was made to offer this innovative surgery to Yuri.

The medical team worked closely with experts from New York, who were amazed by the innovative approach used in Yuri’s case. The professor described how advancements in technology have made complex surgeries like this more achievable, leading to increased success rates and improved patient recovery times.

In preparation for the surgery, a complete 3D printed ankle joint system was customized for Yuri in a laboratory in Italy. The lower bone of the joint was made from titanium based on data obtained from a CT scan of his living leg. Special equipment was also printed to fit his bone structure, allowing for precise cutting of the tibia and insertion of the implant to replace the upper part of the ankle joint.

The surgery performed on Yuri was considered innovative in the world of medicine, with few comparable cases having been performed. Despite this, doctors successfully completed his surgery, and he is now awaiting removal of his cast in about four weeks before beginning rehabilitation and physical therapy. The medical team is optimistic that Yuri’s ankle functionality will be fully restored, allowing him to walk without assistance.

Yuri expressed hope for relief from pain he has been experiencing during his recovery process.

Overall, this case demonstrates how technological advancements can lead to new surgical possibilities and improved outcomes for patients like Yuri who face unique challenges in their journey towards full recovery.
