In Apache Junction, Arizona, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management recently conducted training sessions to prepare for the state’s upcoming wildfire season. The training not only trained agencies in firefighting efforts but also mentored a group of students who are interested in pursuing a career in wildland firefighting.

Among the students was Hailey Mattingly, a senior at Sunrise Senior High School, who has always dreamed of becoming a firefighter since eighth grade. Despite the fact that only ten percent of women enter the profession, Mattingly remains determined and believes that with the right mindset and dedication, she can achieve her goals.

Instructor and fire captain Keyhan Tabak emphasizes the importance of developing both tangible and intangible skills in those who take the course. He believes that the qualities and leadership abilities learned in the training can be applied to various aspects of life, not just firefighting.

For Mattingly, she plans to gain more hands-on experience during the upcoming summer by volunteering with local fire departments. She encourages other young girls with similar aspirations to follow their hearts and do thorough research to achieve their dreams. She believes that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.
