Students from different schools in the Fraser Valley showcased 116 innovative science projects at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair held on April 11. The event took place at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), and featured projects by students from Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, and Hope. Some of the projects were presented individually while others were group or class projects.

One of the excited participants was Avneet Singh Sandhu, a Grade 5 student from Dasmesh Punjabi School who presented his project on plant photosynthesis. The topics of the projects varied widely, covering issues such as global warming, mental health, and even a 3-D printer.

At Dasmesh Punjabi School in Abbotsford, students went through a rigorous selection process for their science fair projects. In an initial in-class round, five projects from each class were chosen before being narrowed down to three finalists. These finalists then presented their projects at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair. Gurnihaal Singh Bains, a Grade 4 student at Dasmesh Punjabi School shared her surprise and excitement at being selected to participate in this prestigious event.

The students’ innovative projects aimed to spark an interest in science and encourage creativity among participants. For instance, Grade 8 students Japandeep Gill and Metaab Khangura were inspired to create a sensor system for parking lots after missing their flight at the airport. The sensor system would help drivers locate available parking spots easily and quickly find their vehicles upon return. Other aspiring young scientists eagerly awaited the awards ceremony on April 17 to find out how they fared in the competition.

Overall, the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair was a great opportunity for students to showcase their skills and talents in science while also inspiring others to pursue careers in this exciting field.
