Europe has long relied on America to take responsibility for its security. However, with Trump in office, the dynamics could change. Recently, Europe received military aid for Ukraine after a narrow majority vote in the US House of Representatives. While this was a relief for Europeans, the fundamental problem of Ukraine standing alone against Russia remains.

Despite warnings and calls for support from East Central Europeans and Western European countries, financially strong ones like France, Germany, and Great Britain have been hesitant to provide significant military aid to Ukraine. This lack of support has left Ukraine vulnerable and reliant on outside assistance.

Whether Biden or Trump wins the US presidential election, America’s focus in the coming years will likely be on challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and the Middle East. There is a growing sense in Washington that Europe should be able to handle its own security against Russia, but the lack of united action and leadership from European countries is causing concern in the US.

For Europe to maintain American support, there needs to be a shift in attitude towards taking on a greater burden of defense. Committing to increased defense spending, setting up a fund for military aid to Ukraine, and presenting concrete plans for NATO at the upcoming summit could demonstrate to the USA that Europe is serious about its security.

Overall, the future of European security relies on Western European countries stepping up and showing leadership in defense matters. By taking proactive measures and fulfilling their commitments to NATO and Ukraine, Europe can strengthen its relationship with America and secure a safer future for the continent
