The legendary coach, Cesar Luis Menotti, has passed away at the age of 85. He is best known for leading Argentina to victory in the 1978 World Cup, which was held on home soil. The team defeated the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time with two goals from Mario Kempes, who was named the player of the tournament.

Menotti, a former striker who played for Brazilian side Santos alongside Pele, started his coaching career and went on to have a remarkable career spanning 37 years that took him to various countries such as Italy, Mexico, Uruguay, and Argentina. During his time as an assistant coach with Barcelona in Spain, he won two trophies in just two seasons.

Despite controversy surrounding his decision not to include a young Diego Maradona in the squad during the 1978 World Cup, Menotti’s tenure as coach of the national team was marked by success. However, it came to an end after their elimination by Brazil in the second round of the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Despite this setback, Menotti’s legacy as a coach continues to be celebrated today.
