In the future, there will be a significant shift in packaging regulations in the EU. A majority of EU states have supported a new EU-wide packaging regulation, which was announced by the Belgian EU Council Presidency in Brussels. The regulation aims to reduce waste and ban certain disposable packaging, such as individual packaging for sugar, by 2030.
To collect beverage packaging separately, a deposit system for single-use plastic bottles and aluminum cans is set to be introduced in the EU. Manufacturers are encouraged to keep the weight and volume of packaging low, and the use of the chemical PFAS in packaging will be more strictly limited.
The agreement on this project was reached by negotiators from the EU states and Parliament earlier in the month. Approval from representatives of member states has been secured, clearing another hurdle. Formal confirmation by the Council of Ministers and the plenary session of the European Parliament is pending but considered a formality. This project was based on a legislative proposal from the EU Commission in 2022.
