In the city of Narva, located on Estonia’s border with Russia, tensions have remained high since a referendum in 1993 that rejected a proposal to align with Russia. While separatist sentiments have calmed down, the threat from Russia looms large, with the border bridge closed to vehicles and security measures in place. The Russian President’s recent mention of Narva as historic Russian land has only served to escalate tensions further.

As a result of this ongoing threat, Western governments have provided aid to Ukraine in an effort to prevent another invasion. Estonia is also preparing for the possibility of conflict by focusing on defense and security measures. This includes enhancing its cyber defenses and readiness for a military threat, as well as deploying NATO troops in the region to deter any aggression from Moscow.

Despite efforts to maintain stability in the area, conflicts between different groups persist. Narva’s population is made up of Estonian citizens and Russian speakers, creating a complex dynamic that is further complicated by historical ties and concerns about potential conflict. Sympathies towards Putin are present among some residents despite public displays of support being banned in Estonia.

In light of these challenges, there is a collective effort among NATO members to deter any aggression from Russia and protect their citizens from potential threats. While conflict seems unlikely in the immediate future, preparations are being made for any eventuality that may arise.
