On a recent walk, I found myself alone on a winding trail that was difficult to follow and covered in snow. The sun was shining warmly on my face, and although I missed my partner, I felt grateful for the opportunity to visit my sister. As I spent a few hours wandering on my own, I experienced a range of emotions including curiosity, anxiety, and joy. Although it was at first daunting to be out in the wilderness on my own, it quickly turned into a welcomed period of solitude that left me feeling calmer and more clear-headed upon returning to civilization.

As social creatures, we have historically been encouraged to stay busy and surrounded by others. However, with adults in the UK and US spending around one-third of their waking lives alone, this trend is becoming more prevalent than ever before. In fact, a recent survey of 75 countries found that 17 of them had more than 25% solo households. While solitude can be isolating at times, there are now growing indications that spending time alone can actually be beneficial for our health and well-being.

Solitude has long been associated with negative outcomes such as depression and loneliness. However, research suggests that taking time for yourself can actually reduce stress levels and improve overall mental health. By giving ourselves permission to take breaks from social obligations and spend time alone with our thoughts and feelings, we can better understand ourselves and develop healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with life’s challenges. Additionally, spending time alone can also foster creativity and provide an opportunity for reflection – both important components of personal growth and development.

In conclusion, while solitude may seem like an indulgence or something only reserved for hermits or introverts, it is actually an important aspect of maintaining our overall health and well-being as adults.
