Sinn Fein First Minister Michelle O’Neill has announced that Economy Minister Conor Murphy will be temporarily stepping down from his role on medical grounds. According to O’Neill, Murphy’s doctor has advised him to take a break from his duties and he will be replaced by former Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey until he is well enough to return.

In a statement, O’Neill confirmed that Murphy’s departure was due to medical reasons and that he would undergo additional tests to determine the extent of his condition. She expressed her wish for a speedy recovery for Murphy and thanked him for his service as Economy Minister. Hargey, who was previously the Communities Minister, has been nominated as the temporary replacement for Murphy.

Conor Murphy had previously informed the Covid-19 Inquiry that he would not be able to attend a scheduled appearance due to health concerns. He was scheduled to appear before the inquiry on Tuesday but will not be able to do so.
