Disney Plus has recently announced plans to charge users for password sharing starting in June. This policy began with new members on January 25 and existing members on March 14 in the US only, following the example set by Netflix. Subscribers suspected of improper sharing will receive reminders to sign up for individual subscriptions over the summer. The merger of the Disney Plus and Hulu apps aims to attract more subscribers to the platform, offering content from both services and integrating viewing history to enhance recommendations.

Disney CEO Bob Iger emphasized the importance of increasing engagement through advanced technology tools like recommendation engines and unified user identities across different Disney platforms. This is crucial in combatting password sharing. In addition, users will have the option to add external members to their family for an additional fee, although specifics on the cost have not been provided yet. The move towards a streaming-only version of ESPN is also projected to contribute to profitability in Disney’s streaming business by the end of the fiscal year. With these plans in place, Disney is taking steps to ensure that its content is accessible only to those who have paid for it.
