The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford has announced a delay in its reopening until 2025 due to unexpected delays in the excavation of a new passenger lift. The museum had originally planned to reopen this summer, ahead of Bradford’s year as UK City of Culture in 2024. However, the setback caused by the ground conditions encountered during excavation has forced a two-phase reopening plan.

Jo Quinton-Tulloch, the museum’s director, emphasized the importance of the new lift in welcoming more visitors and ensuring the museum’s sustainability for the future. Despite the challenges faced during construction, Quinton-Tulloch is confident that the ‘Sound and Vision’ project will transform the museum into an engaging and interactive space.

The new galleries will feature a range of exhibits and activities, including hands-on experiences that showcase scientific principles and media technologies. Visitors will also have access to state-of-the-art facilities such as sound engineering studios and live art installations.

Helen Featherstone, north of England director for The National Lottery Heritage Fund, expressed excitement about the museum’s transformation and its role as a star attraction for City of Culture 2025. With improvements to the main entrance and additional galleries, visitors can expect an inspiring experience that celebrates science and media culture in Bradford for years to come.
