In the post-apocalyptic world of “Fallout,” the surface is a dangerous place filled with monstrous creatures and strange individuals. One such character is The Ghoul, a gunslinger played by Walton Goggins. The Ghoul has survived for two centuries since the bombs fell and is a bounty hunter with numerous secrets that connect him to Lucy’s story and the entire “Fallout” universe. He serves as a thematic lynchpin to the show, much like the Man in Black in “Westworld.” Another key character is Maximus, a soldier in the Brotherhood of Steel who is thrust into a hero role despite being unprepared for it. Despite his hero status, Lucy is more street-savvy and capable than Maximus.

The show pays homage to the “Fallout” games while adapting its general tone for television. The first few episodes capture the unpredictable terror of an open-world game, where characters can be faced with monsters at any moment. Elements from the game’s combat system, such as slo-mo shots of body parts being ripped off, are included but not overly emphasized. The show features a Wild West shootout reminiscent of the game, but it doesn’t rely on these scenes heavily in every episode. The aesthetic of the show successfully captures the unpredictable nature of the “Fallout” world, keeping viewers on their toes.

One aspect that sets this show apart from other shows is its willingness to break narrative predictability. However, maintaining this tone throughout a full season proves challenging, and the show falters around the middle when two characters embark on a side quest. While it’s admirable that they take risks with narrative structure, it ultimately hurts momentum and makes an already short 8-episode season feel even longer.
