A health alert has been issued by the Florida Department of Health in Polk County for dangerous blue-green algae blooms in Lake Conine, Winter Haven, Florida. A water sample taken on April 2nd revealed the presence of these harmful algal blooms, prompting the public to exercise caution in and around the lake.

To ensure safety, it is recommended that no one should drink, swim, wade, or use any personal watercraft, boat, or water ski in the lake where the blooms are visible. If contact is made with the algae or discolored and smelly water, it is important to wash your skin and clothing thoroughly with soap to prevent any health risks. Additionally, it is advised to keep pets away from the harmful waters.

In order to avoid potential health issues, it is advised not to use the lake water for washing dishes or cooking. Shellfish from the lake where the blooms are present should not be consumed, but healthy fish caught from the lakes are still considered safe to eat after being washed thoroughly with bottled or tap water.

If you notice any blue-green algae blooms in Lake Conine or any other body of water in Florida, it is crucial to report them to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) either by calling 855-305-3903 or reporting online. It is essential to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and others from the dangers associated with blue-green algae blooms.
