William Brangham: The issue of economic inequality between men and women is a pressing matter that affects at least 93 countries. This disparity not only harms women, but also their children, families, and communities at large. Closing the gender gap in pay or access to loans and capital could give the global economy a $7 trillion boost, as estimated by the United Nations.

This week, world leaders are gathering in Washington, D.C., for meetings hosted by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. One of the voices advocating for a more equitable economy is Melinda French Gates, who serves as the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a funder of “NewsHour.”
