Cindy McCain, the Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), is urging the international community not to overlook other countries facing famine as the world’s attention remains fixed on Gaza. In an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union,” McCain emphasized the urgent need to address the dire situations in countries such as Sudan, DRC Congo, Somalia, Yemen, and Haiti.
While Gaza is currently in the spotlight, McCain stressed that these other countries are on the brink of even larger food crises. She specifically highlighted the critical situation in Sudan, where nearly 18 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity, and 7.7 million individuals have been displaced both within and outside the country since April 2023. Despite her efforts to raise awareness about the looming famine in Gaza, McCain has also been focusing on addressing the crises unfolding in Sudan and other regions. She underscored the importance of not forgetting about these countries as they face severe food shortages and displacement on a large scale. As the world unites to support Gaza, McCain is advocating for continued attention and assistance for Sudan and other vulnerable nations.
