Valarie Nelson, a kindergarten teacher at Chamberlain Elementary School in the Chamberlain School District, has been recognized for her excellence in teaching mathematics and science. Along with two other K-6 teachers from South Dakota, Nelson was selected as a state-level finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program.

With 15 years of experience in the classroom, Nelson holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Leadership and Administration from Northern State University. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she also serves as the assistant coach for cross country and track and field, earning recognition as the Area 3 Assistant Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2022.

Valerie has been actively involved in various leadership roles within her school and community, including serving as a team leader, mentor teacher, member of the teacher assistance team, and former board member of the Treehouse Preschool. She currently serves on the Chamberlain-Oacoma Early Learning Committee, demonstrating her commitment to education at all levels.

The PAEMST program recognizes outstanding mathematics and science teachers in grades K-12, with over 5,000 teachers honored since its inception in 1983. Presidential awardees receive a citation signed by the President of the United States, a trip to Washington, D.C. for recognition events and professional development opportunities
