New Wave of Migrants Sweeps Through Central America and Panama

A surge in migration has been reported across various countries in the region, including Panama and Honduras. In Darien, Panama’s Ministry of Public Security announced that between January 1st and March 31st, 2024, a staggering 109,069 migrants had crossed the Darien region. Among the nationalities with the highest number of entries are Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, Haitians, and Colombians.

Meanwhile, in Honduras, the National Migration Institute recorded that between January and February 2024, a significant increase of 125.6% compared to the same period in 2023 saw 87,852 migrants cross the country. The migrants mostly consist of Venezuelans, Cubans, Haitians, and Ecuadorians with a smaller percentage coming from other countries.

In Colombia, statistics show that out of the Venezuelan migrants in the country, 52% are women who fall within the productive age group of 18 to 39 years old. A significant portion of these migrants have been granted Temporary Protection Permits (PPT), which give them access to essential services such as identification, health care education and justice.
