In the town of Pragsdorf, located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a family gathered to celebrate what would have been their son Joel’s seventh birthday. Despite the immense loss and sadness, Kathleen and Till K. wanted to set aside their pain and sorrow to honor their son’s memory on his special day.
Just two days prior, the regional court in Neubrandenburg had sentenced Geri K. to seven years and nine months in prison for the murder of Joel, who was only six years old. The family decorated the meadow near the football field where the tragic incident had occurred with photos, candles, stuffed animals, and garlands to create a festive atmosphere in remembrance of Joel.
The celebration included Joel’s four siblings, Uncle Felix, Aunt Tini, Grandma, and Grandpa, as well as friends and acquaintances who gathered to remember the young boy. Despite the somber circumstances, the family wanted to make the event joyful, with strawberry shortcake and a Minion-themed cake, Joel’s favorite.
Reflecting on Joel’s birth, his mother Kathleen recalled the fond memories of his early days and the joy he brought to their lives. Although Joel could no longer be physically present to celebrate with them
