In the women’s hockey world championship final in Utica, New York, Canada emerged victorious over the U.S. with a 6-5 win in overtime. The game was closely contested, with both teams trading goals within three minutes of each other throughout regulation time. This resulted in four goals being scored by each team before Serdachny’s winning goal on a power play with only one second remaining after the U.S. received a penalty for having too many skaters on the ice.

The victory allowed Canada to regain the world title they lost to the U.S. in 2023, marking their first win against their rivals since then. Historically, the U.S. and Canada have had close matches, often decided by one goal and going into overtime. However, this game was the highest-scoring match between these two rivals since 2015 when the U.S won 7-5 in the World Championship final.

In addition to Serdachny’s goal, Marie-Philip Poulin scored her first two goals of the tournament for Canada while American player Hilary Knight extended her record with her 65th career world championship goal. Alex Carpenter and Laila Edwards also contributed goals for the U
