In the IIHF women’s world championship, Team Canada emerged victorious with a thrilling 6-5 overtime win against Team USA in Utica, N.Y. Danielle Serdachny scored the game-winning goal on the power play less than six minutes into the first overtime period in a high-scoring, back-and-forth game against their cross-border rivals. This game marked the second-highest scoring gold medal game ever at the women’s worlds and the highest since the U.S. won 7-5 in 2015.

Team Canada had been motivated to rewrite their story after losing to Team USA last year in Brampton, ON on Canadian soil. With this victory, they showed resilience and determination, avenging their previous loss to Team USA. Marie-Philip Poulin scored twice in the game, a significant improvement from her two assists in six previous games. Erin Ambrose, Julia Gosling, and Emily Clark also found the back of the net for the Canadians. Ann-Renée Desbiens made 19 saves on 24 shots to secure the win for Team Canada.
