The UK and Canada have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at sharing knowledge and technology related to creating digital maps of underground infrastructure. This geospatial mapping project stores data on the location of underground pipes and cables, which is vital for infrastructure development.

The agreement was signed by Viscount Camrose, Minister for Intellectual Property in the UK, and Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure in the Government of Ontario. Viscount Camrose expressed his satisfaction with Ontario’s recognition of the Geospatial Commission’s work in developing the National Underground Asset Register (NUAR) and its potential benefits for Ontario’s infrastructure and economy. On the other hand, Surma emphasized the historic partnership between Ontario and the UK in sharing knowledge and experience in the infrastructure sector.

Through this collaboration, both parties seek to leverage their expertise to drive innovation and implement solutions that support modern infrastructure development. The agreement aims to enhance worker safety, reduce asset strikes, and improve the accuracy of geospatial infrastructure data. The UK’s Geospatial Commission will share its best practices and technology with Infrastructure Ontario to accelerate infrastructure projects in Ontario and address evolving needs of growing communities.
