Despite their conjoined status, they emphasized that it did not limit or define them. Lori, one of the twins, stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, “Normal is whatever you make of it, but we’re very happy. It all comes down to compromise. If more people in life did that, the world would be a better place.”
In 2007, the twins made history by becoming the world’s first same-sex conjoined twins to identify as different genders. George came out as transgender according to Guiness World Records. Throughout their lives, they consistently emphasized that their conjoined status did not limit or define them.
