Boston Celtics Sign Jrue Holiday to Four-Year, $135 Million Contract Extension

The Boston Celtics and veteran guard Jrue Holiday have reached a four-year, $135 million contract extension agreement, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported. In order to accept the long-term deal, Holiday opted to decline his $37.3 million player option for the 2024-’25 season. Since being traded from the Portland Trail Blazers in February 2021, Holiday has seamlessly integrated himself into the team’s lineup and has been a valuable addition.

Holiday originally came to Portland as part of a major trade that saw Damian Lillard head to the Milwaukee Bucks. Just a week later, he found himself being traded once again, this time to Boston. In his first season with the Celtics, Holiday has been contributing an average of 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and .9 steals per game.

At 33 years old, Holiday joins elite company as only the fourth player in NBA history to sign a guaranteed contract worth over $100 million at his age or older, alongside players like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Al Horford. After being selected 17th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2009 NBA draft, Holiday has had a successful career with stints on the New Orleans Pelicans and the Milwaukee Bucks before joining the Celtics last year.
