Finland is facing challenges with the interpretation of the restoration regulation’s prohibition of impairment and the level of obligations to restore widely occurring habitat types. Despite tight deadlines and opposition from some EU countries, Belgium, holding the EU presidency, is determined to push the restoration regulation to completion during this election season.
The Belgian Environment Minister, Alain Maron, emphasized the importance of getting the restoration regulation passed, even though the approval process may extend beyond the European elections in June. Germany, France, and Spain, along with 11 other EU countries, are in favor of swift approval, while Finland, Sweden, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands
