In Spain, the new book by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt titled “The Anxious Generation: Why Social Networks Are Causing a Disease Epidemic” is set to hit the shelves on May 29. The book has already gained popularity in English within a week of its release, becoming a best-seller on Amazon lists and The New York Times.

Haidt, a professor at New York University, has been researching and writing about the increase in mental health issues among teenagers globally for years, pointing to the surge in mobile phone and social media use as a key factor. However, there are academics and researchers who challenge Haidt’s claims, arguing that the evidence for such a direct link between screen time and mental health issues is not clear. This debate has become one of the most important technological challenges of the decade.

Some researchers suggest that there may be other contributing factors, such as access to guns, exposure to violence, or social isolation that also play a role in the rise of mental health problems among young people. While acknowledging these potential confounding variables, Haidt advocates for caution in allowing young people access to smartphones and social media. He proposes limits on screen time and emphasizes the importance of personal relationships and face-to-face communication.

Despite his warnings about technology’s potential negative impact on mental well-being, some critics argue that technology can have positive effects if used appropriately. They point to educational resources and support systems available through digital platforms as examples of how technology can be used effectively to promote mental health.

The ongoing debate highlights the need for more research into this complex relationship between technology and mental health. It also raises questions about responsibility – both individual responsibility for responsible use of technology as well as corporate responsibility for promoting safe and healthy internet use. Ultimately, finding a balance between technology’s benefits and risks will require ongoing discussion, collaboration between experts from various fields including psychology, education
