The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent warning for Austrians to leave Iran immediately. This was reiterated in the updated travel advice released on Friday, which advises against traveling to Iran due to the heightened risk caused by the tense situation in the region.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that a travel warning has been in place for Iran for some time, but the updated advice reflects the increased risk following recent events. Despite this, Austrian Airlines (AUA) flights to Tehran have been suspended until next Thursday, following in the footsteps of Lufthansa which also canceled flights to and from Tehran. The German Foreign Ministry has also advised its citizens to leave Iran amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
The background to this updated travel advice is the growing hostilities between Iran and Israel, with the Iranian regime threatening a retaliatory strike following the killing of Iranian commanders in Damascus. Additionally, pro-Iran militias operate in certain areas around Gaza Strip, along Lebanon and Syria borders, posing particular security concerns. The ongoing tensions in these regions have led both Austrian and German governments to issue warnings to their citizens in these areas.
