In light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has announced that funding for the UN aid agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, will be resumed. Additionally, Canberra will not only release frozen aid of $13.8 million but will also increase it by $6 million. Wong stated that Israel had provided “some” information to Australia, but after review, it was determined that UNRWA is not a terrorist organization and that current safeguards adequately protect Australian taxpayer funding.
Wong emphasized the importance of UNRWA in providing critical assistance to those in need in the Gaza Strip, stating that people are on the brink of starvation and the agency plays a crucial role in preventing this.
