The AUKUS partnership, formed in 2021, aims to enhance regional peace and security through the development and sharing of advanced security technologies. The United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and South Korea are all involved in the agreement.

During a meeting between South Korea and Australia’s defense and foreign ministers in Melbourne, South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik mentioned that the government is considering sharing advanced military technology with the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia through AUKUS Pillar 2. This collaboration could involve a wide range of security technologies like artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, and hypersonic systems.

South Korea views this opportunity positively as it sees the importance of enhancing peace and stability within the region through cooperation. Japanese Defense Minister Yoshihide Suga is also in talks to join AUKUS Pillar 2 for technology development and sharing.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles commended South Korea’s initiatives to deepen ties with Japan, noting that this positive impact on the strategic landscape of the region. By upholding the rules-based order in the region and around the world, Australia is working with its partners to maintain peace and stability through AUKUS. The inclusion of Japan and South Korea in AUKUS Pillar 2 signifies a significant step forward in regional security cooperation.
