Arctic Affairs Should be a Priority for the New Defense Commissioner, Says Elsi Katainen
The Arctic region is becoming increasingly important for Europe and the world as a whole. As such, it should be a top priority for the new defense commissioner, according to Finnish politician Elsi Katainen. In her letter to Commission chairman Ursula von der Leyen and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, she expressed her belief that Finland needs a dedicated Arctic commissioner to strengthen its presence in the region and address Europe’s northern dimension comprehensively.
Katainen believes that the EU has not invested enough in this area despite recognizing its significance in the 2021 Arctic Communication. She argues that a clear EU Arctic security strategy is necessary to address the changing security situation in Europe’s northern borders.
Borrell agrees with Katainen that the EU must play a more active role in Arctic affairs, emphasizing the importance of monitoring security developments and cooperating with NATO and Arctic states. He believes that a dedicated EU Arctic commissioner would help achieve these goals effectively.
In her proposal, Katainen calls for greater commitment to Arctic security and believes that it would be suitable for the new defense commissioner’s portfolio. She expects the Commission to demonstrate its dedication to the region’s prosperity and security by providing necessary resources for investment in the Arctic moving forward.
