In recent news, American technology giant Apple has laid off over 600 employees at the end of March, marking the first round of dismissals at the company since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. According to data from the state of California, this workforce reduction took place on March 27, with 614 employees being let go from various facilities in California. However, it is believed that the actual scope of the layoffs at Apple may be larger, as the company is only required to report layoffs in California.
The job cuts are reportedly linked to a shift in strategy at Apple concerning the development of an autonomous electric car. Late February reports suggested that Apple had abandoned the project, which began in 2014 and had employed nearly 2,000 people with billions of dollars invested. Many of these employees may now be transferred to Apple’s AI division, which focuses on generative artificial intelligence. This move signifies a significant restructuring within the company’s operations.
