The image of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as AMLO, is adorning souvenirs sold like hotcakes in Mexico. In front of the presidential palace, crowds gather around stands selling various items with the president’s face on them, from plush dolls to stickers and hats. Despite not being eligible for re-election, López Obrador remains a central figure in Mexican politics due to his popularity among the people.

Armando Monter, a longtime supporter of López Obrador, opened a souvenir stand selling items with the president’s image. The demand for these items has grown significantly, reflecting the president’s popularity among the working class who have benefited from social programs implemented by him during his presidency.

While López Obrador enjoys high approval ratings among many Mexicans, there are growing dissatisfactions with some of his policies and actions. Critics point to increasing cartel violence, attacks on journalists and electoral reforms that some fear could harm democracy. Recent protests against the president have highlighted these concerns and opposition parties have criticized him in the lead-up to the upcoming presidential election.

As López Obrador’s presidency comes to an end, many of his supporters plan to vote for Claudia Sheinbaum, his ally and favorite to win the election. Sheinbaum is seen as a continuation of López Obrador’s policies and has garnered support from many who believe in the transformation he has brought to the country. Despite some criticisms and challenges, López Obrador remains a popular figure among many Mexicans who view him as a champion of the poor and marginalized.
