Amazon and the Fs Italiane Group Logistics Center have formed an agreement to transport goods between Amazon distribution centers in Germany and Italy using rail transport. This initiative aims to decrease international road freight traffic, lower CO2 emissions, and alleviate congestion on major European roads. Additionally, it enables Amazon to optimize inventory management, shorten delivery times, and enhance the overall customer experience.

The FS Group program involves three trains per week from Duisburg to Pomezia, operated by Mercitalia Intermodal, and six return trips between Herne and Verona, managed by TX Logistik. By utilizing these routes at full capacity, an estimated 9,000 tonnes of carbon emissions can be prevented annually compared to international road transport. The CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, Sabrina De Filippis, highlighted the commitment of the FS Group Logistics Hub to provide sustainable transport solutions to partner companies. By integrating advanced technologies into their operations, such as digital automatic coupling of freight cars and digitalization of warehouses, they aim to reduce emissions while ensuring high-quality service.

The partnership with Mercitalia allows Amazon to further develop intermodal and sustainable operations in Italy. Lorenzo Barbo, CEO of Amazon Italia Logistics emphasized the importance of this collaboration in expanding the railway intermodal sector in Italy. Both companies are focused on innovation and exploring more efficient delivery methods with rail transport playing a significant role. The Duisburg-Pomezia and Herne-Verona routes serve as a strategic link connecting major logistics hubs in Germany with Northern and Central Italy.

This collaboration underscores the importance of sustainable practices in the logistics industry and the positive impact that rail transport can have on reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency. Through partnerships like this, companies are paving the way for a more environmentally friendly and efficient logistics network.
