A recent study conducted by HP in partnership with Oxford Economics highlights the crucial role of technology in promoting economic inclusion and sustainability. The research found that a vast majority of business and government leaders (76%) view technology as essential in enabling traditionally marginalized groups to access the economy. This data not only reinforces the perception of digital as a bridge towards equity, but also signals a radical shift in the approach to economic and social development policies.

Artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as one of the most influential technologies in this context, with many business leaders currently using it or planning to do so in the near term to pursue crucial sustainability objectives. According to the research, 90% of these leaders use AI to improve access to digital education, 89% to develop the workforce, and 86% to increase diversity within their organizations. AI not only enhances the productivity and efficiency of companies but also reduces the risk of human errors and encourages creativity and the generation of new ideas.

HP’s Chief Supply Chain Officer, Ernest Nicolas, believes in the promising potential of artificial intelligence in accelerating sustainable development and social impact goals. The company aims to use AI in various ways, from responsibly designing AI PCs for new users to supporting local farmers in growing stronger businesses. However, despite the benefits of technology, about a third of the world’s population remains offline, leading to billions of dollars in lost GDP every year. The digital divide has widened with the rise of technology, and AI could exacerbate these disparities.

In response, HP is committed to expanding access to technology and equipping people with the necessary skills to use it effectively. The company has already expanded digital equity since 2021 by reaching over 45 million people worldwide and aims to reach 150 million people by 2030. HP has also launched initiatives such as Digital Hubs in collaboration with World YMCA, HP Creative Labs in several countries including US & Philippines, and an LIFE skills development program globally. Furthermore, HP is expanding its free LIFE Digital Business Skills course later this year include an AI skills course that will provide training on responsible use AI for individuals looking for new career opportunities or entrepreneurs looking for new ways grow their businesses globally.
