As the Republican National Convention (RNC) approaches in just under 100 days, businesses in Milwaukee are preparing for the influx of visitors. However, some business owners have concerns about security and logistics. On Thursday, an information session was held for businesses affected by the RNC’s security zone to address their questions and provide resources.

The RNC is set to take place from August 23rd to 26th, with around 50,000 visitors expected to attend. Two women who own a boat company are eagerly anticipating the summer season, their busiest time of year. When they asked about river access during the RNC, they were met with uncertainty. “We don’t know,” they were told.

Allison Prange, chief operating officer of the MKE 2024 Host Committee, encourages businesses to sign up for resources available on their website and through informal information sessions. She reminds them that while it can be challenging, there will be more information leading up to the event. The host committee wants people to be in Milwaukee during the week of the RNC and support local businesses by visiting bars and restaurants or enjoying the lakefront. “They rely on regular customers coming back,” said Prange.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s chief of staff also assures that city operations such as trash pickup and library hours will remain unchanged during the RNC. More details about security maps and checkpoints are expected by mid-June when finalized plans are announced.
